The Viking Bank Story

The beginning of what is known today as Viking Bank started in April 1981 when a group of Alexandria residents brought the Association into legal existence. Business was first transacted in an office at 504 Broadway.  Viking Savings Association began as a state chartered mutual savings association. It was the first such charter issued by the Commerce Commission (Banking Division) in more than twenty years in the state of Minnesota.

Viking Savings Association was converted to a Federal Charter in November 1982 to take advantage of increased services that could be offered under deregulation of banking institutions. By 1984, it was determined that additional space was needed, and the bank moved to the old Pete’s Super Value building at 1311 Broadway in December of that year.

In October 2007, Viking Savings was sold to another group of local owners which insured that the bank would remain an independent locally owned and operated financial institution.   The name has since changed from Viking Savings to Viking Bank to better reflect the wide range of banking services that we are able to provide.  To this day, Viking Bank remains the only bank chartered in the City of Alexandria, which means that our headquarters are right here, in Alexandria.   This sets us apart as a truly locally owned and managed bank.

We have been blessed to be a part of a vibrant community that has grown with us. In 2016, it was evident that once again additional space was needed. Construction began in the spring of 2016, and in January 2017 the bank relocated from 1311 Broadway to 4277 Dakota Street in Alexandria. To better serve our customers, we redesigned the look of our bank and added many new technology features.  Viking Bank continues to be committed to providing outstanding customer service to our customers and our community with the same great staff and ownership.

In December 2019, Viking Bank again had the opportunity grow, this time by expanding to a second location through acquisition of the First State Bank of Ashby. The addition of a second location is an exciting chance for Viking Bank to offer a more flexible banking experience to our customers in Alexandria, Ashby, and surrounding communities.  We now have teams in two locations ready to assist you on your banking journey.
